8 p.m. Friday night, living room
"You sure about staying home babe?" Maahin asked again while tying his shoe laces. He was travelling to KL for a quick work trip.
"I am sure, love. It's a matter of few hours. You will be back by sun down tomorrow.” Eesha replied.
"OK then. Be careful, don't be naughty, lock the doors, and sleep well."
"Yeah, yes, uh huh, go go go, gonna miss your flight." Eesha kissed his nose and pushed him out the house.
Bolting the door, she turned around and took in the madness that was her home. After a 60 hours’ work week and no elves to order around, it looked like a bunch of drunken ninjas had a kathakali practice in her living room.
"Bloody mess! I'm not up to the whole clean-baby-clean drill tonight", she muttered. “Tonight, I just want to relax.”
So she ignored it all and poured herself a glass of wine. Fished out some pizza leftovers from the fridge and plopped down on the sofa. With Maahin gone, sleep wasn’t going to come easy. So she chose a few movies at random and decided to do an all night movie marathon. 4 movies, an empty bottle of wine and a whole lotta hours later, she finally climbed into bed at dawn. "Been so long, I did something like this! What a helluva night", Eesh murmured to herself as she went under.
Exactly how much hell, she realized in a few hours...
10 a.m. Saturday morning, bedroom
Something was ringing. Incessant. Something worse was pounding. Like a hammer to her head. If she focused real hard and ignored the pounding, she could hear the ringing.
“Oh God! Make it stop, make it stop. Maahi get it na yaar!”
It was her phone and it continued to ring. She remembered she was alone and patted around her pillow to find it. “Bugger, where are you hiding?” Not finding it, blurry eyed, she reached out to feel for it on the nearby table. Like an out of body experience, she saw the rest of her follow that extended hand. There was a dull thud, some sense of pain and her eyes popped open.
“Oh shit!” Her brain jump started with some very colourful words and she found herself nose to nose with the shiny wooden floor. “Mocking me, aren’t you?” she grumbled and raised her head, only to hit against the chair and winced again. That’s when she saw her phone under the table!
Wondering why everything was going wrong, she picked up the call.
“Where have you been?? This is my nth try!” Maahin was exploding on the other end of the line.
“I was sleeping and then couldn’t find my phone.”
Typical, he thought. “I called to remind you about the doctor’s appointment. You have to be there at 11 right?”
“Oh yeah! Thanks Maahi! Damn, ouch!”
“What happened, did you hurt yourself?”
“Nothing, just a cramp.” Moving fast was a very bad idea, she thought.
“Look at the time! Good you reminded me. What would I do without you! Ok, I gotta go get ready. Talk to you in sometime.” Not wanting him to know, she quickly hung up.
Realizing she was still on the floor, Eesha got up to assess the damage. “Good thing, I already have a doctor’s appointment.” Her head was still pounding, there was a pink purple bruise on her elbow and her little toe was on a fast track to become the big toe, just not the human kind.
“Thanks to Avatar, I now know a dozen different types of blue”, she mused. Limping, she made it to the fridge, got some ice and learned that stupidity didn't come cheap.
Later, sitting in the doctor’s office, Eesha promised herself that she will not experiment with separation of brain from body again and learn from her mistakes.
Will she or won't she? Time will tell.
